Free Photo to Cartoon Converter
Cartoon, comic or bold stylized look in one click.
What does the photo-to-cartoon tool do?
The freeimgtool cartoon tool turns a normal photo into a stylized version that looks hand-drawn. It uses edge-preserving smoothing to flatten colors into clean regions, then overlays adaptive edge masks to draw cartoon-like outlines around shapes. The result keeps the composition of the original but trades fine texture for bold flat color.
Three styles are available. Cartoon uses posterized colors and crisp edges — the classic comic-book look. Anime applies stronger smoothing and thinner outlines to mimic Japanese animation cels. Bold uses edge-aware stylization for a painted-and-inked look with heavier outlines. Your photo is processed on your own device and is never uploaded.

Cartoon vs Anime vs Bold: which style to pick
- Cartoon smooths the photo, then snaps every color channel to eight flat levels. Skies, walls and clothes turn into solid blocks of color, like a comic panel. It suits group shots, pets, street scenes and anything colorful.
- Anime runs two gentle smoothing passes and keeps the original color range. Skin stays soft and the outlines are thinner, so faces look polished rather than posterized. It is the best pick for selfies and headshots.
- Bold uses a wider stylization filter and heavier ink lines. The result reads like a painted poster. It works well on landscapes, cars, food and product shots where you want strong shapes.
Not sure? Run all three. Each pass takes a few seconds and the original photo stays loaded, so switching style is one click.
Tips for a better cartoon
- Use a sharp, well-lit photo. Outlines are drawn wherever the image gets locally darker. Blur and heavy shadow produce thick, muddy lines.
- Keep the background simple. A plain wall or open sky flattens into one clean color. Leaves, crowds and patterned fabric turn into lots of small lines.
- Crop close. The subject should fill most of the frame. Faces that are tiny in the shot lose their features once colors are flattened.
- Avoid grainy night shots.Sensor noise can trigger stray outline dots. Clean the photo first with the image enhancer's Denoise mode, then cartoonify it.
How the cartoon effect works
There is no AI model here. The tool builds a cartoon from two classic image-processing steps. First, an edge-aware smoothing filter blurs inside each region but stops at edges, so colors flatten while shapes stay put. Second, it converts the photo to grayscale, removes speckle with a median filter, and runs an adaptive threshold: any pixel noticeably darker than its neighbours becomes an ink line. The line mask is multiplied over the flat colors to give the finished cartoon.
All of this runs in a background worker inside your browser tab. Photos are scaled to at most 1600 pixels on the long edge before processing, which keeps the effect fast on phones. The download is a high-quality JPG at that size.
Frequently asked questions
Is this cartoon tool free?
Yes. No signup, no premium tier.
What is the maximum upload size?
Five megabytes per photo. Compress first with the image compressor if your file is larger.
Does it use a real AI model?
Not a deep AnimeGAN. It uses classical computer-vision filters running in your browser, which is why it finishes in seconds and never uploads your photo. A deep model would require both a server and an upload.
Which style works best on selfies?
Anime usually flatters portraits best because the smoother skin tones look more polished. Cartoon is better on group photos and outdoor shots.
Is the output watermarked?
No. The downloaded JPG is clean.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The upload box opens the camera roll or the camera directly on most phones.
Is my image stored?
No. The cartoon effect is a local pixel pipeline running in your browser. Your photo stays on your device and is never transmitted.
Can I get a vector/SVG version?
No. The output is a raster JPG. Tracing a photo to clean vector paths is a different problem from stylising it.
